Well, it's not as hard as you think, but it does take some coordination and a little patience to master. It's kinda like rubbing you belly and patting your head at the same time. There are three different techniques that you will need to use to play Universe Communion: smacking the guitar body (for percussive effect), tapping the fretboard (hammer-ons), and slapping the strings. We will discuss all three techniques and then apply them to each passage of the song. ====== Tuning ====== In order to play this song, you will need to tune your guitar to EBBF#BE. ======== Notation ======== X = Smacking the guitar body h = Hammer-on p = pull-off / = Slide up \ = Slide down <12> = Harmonic at 12th fret ======================== Smacking the guitar body ======================== Stu smacks his guitar in various areas (front and sides) of his guitar body to produce a variety of different percussive notes. We have used the letter "X" to denote when to smack the guitar. ==================== Slapping the strings ==================== The open notes in the song, shown as "000000" are when you will need to slap the strings with your strumming hand. Slapping close to the bridge gives the best tone. The slapping technique is integral to the next technique: hammer-ons. =================== Tapping the strings =================== Directly after you slap the strings, you will be tapping the notes with your fretting hand. Whenever you see the letter "h" you will need to hammer-on (or tap) the corresponding note. We have found that using your middle and ring fingers give the most strength when hammering on the notes. Play around with it and use whatever fingering is most comfortable for you. ========== The Lyrics ========== There was a star that was hidden in space - an undiscovered gem until it's denizens decided they had chosen the Dagon to give the gift to them So with the shocking revelations, of a primitive people, our knowledge was redefined Enlightened and wise, the simple African tribe has educated the modern minds Our potential was choked under the scientific yoke Afraid that if we open our eyes, we'll have to realize If the message from a distant sun can reach us There is a magic that is waiting and is willing to teach us how to suture every soul into one concentric whole Earth can find the perfect union in the universe communion In this area of Western thought, the spirit is in a vise we are driven to seek in a futile pursuit with a means that won't suffice It is a science with a limited scope where the heart and head collide resigned to the laws of only tangible proof to which the truth does not abide We stifle and smother the mystic wonder Is our arrogance a deafening fear of what we'll have to hear? Chorus We have a tendency think that it's our practical senses that get these questions solved but those are tenuous tools and the more we employ them, the slower we evolve Denied by suppression the deeper lessons ======= The Tab ======= Rhythm 1: "There was a star that was hidden in space..."
